I play at several venues and a new thing is happening at a couple places where they spread balls around the court and during play they will discard a ball that has been in play and pick up a closer ball and continue to play. We go from a live ball to a dead ball or a cracked ball or whatever. I wondered if this is a common way to play or is it unusual. I am receiving some flak for preferring to start and finish with one ball if possible. Am I being too fussy? What say you all? Thanks
Welcome, Richard!
“It depends” is my answer. (You’re welcome.)
The Franklin X-40 is known to crack – especially in colder weather. The Selkirk Pro S1 goes out-of-round even more frequently than the X-40 cracks. Other times balls simply wear-out … suddenly.
It would bother ME if mid-game we switched from (say) an X-40 to the S1, because the two balls bounce (and play) very differently.
I guess I’m saying, “Yes. You’re being a bit too fussy.”

It would be considered very unusual where I play (D.C. area). I don’t know what you mean by spread balls around the court. Hopefully, they are in some kind of container so as not to be a trip hazard! In some cases, if a ball is sent way far away, instead of running after it we might pick up a new ball, but they are all pretty new and never cracked.
