Just passed my 3-year anniversary in this sport; having migrated from being a tennis coach and instructor for 29 years. I agree that the right paddle – for the right player and playing style – is important (almost crucial).
Started with the Franklin Ben Johns, which (frustratingly) lost its grit far too quickly. But it was essentially a control paddle, which is right for my game – and I tend to be a “Find what works and stick with it” guy. Unlike some of my friends, I don’t change from paddle-to-paddle. Switched to the CRBN 1. The texture lasts between 1 and 1.5 years for me, so I went through three of them.
I’m now 2 months into playing with the CRBN Genesis 1. (Selkirk’s 008 is a very similar paddle.) I think these all foam core paddle are “the future”. It is all of a control / spin and power paddle … and I never would have believed such a thing were possible.
